LiposuctionWrite a comment
What is liposuction?
"Liposuction, or simply lipo, is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes fat from the human body in an attempt to change its shape. Evidence does not support an effect on weight beyond a couple of months and it does not appear to affect obesity related problems. In the United States it is the most commonly done cosmetic surgery." Wikipedia
Liposuction is also referred to as “liposculpture” as it is recommended to patients with normal bodyweight in order to improve contours and proportions of the body and remove excessive fat. Liposuction gives excellent results in case of correction of local fat depositions while not being a means against obesity. However, liposuction surgery allows changing proportions of the body especially in regard to fat deposits extremely resistant to diet and physical exercise.
Indications to liposuction
What is of concern to patients most often?
- Excessive body weight (obesity);
- Local fat deposits.
All those disturbances can of course be observed in one and the same person. However, they have different etiologies and various ways of correction accordingly. Each of the above mentioned conditions has its own classification, etiology and pathogenesis.
Obesity is a chronic relapsing disease characterized with excessive deposition of fatty tissue in the organism..It emerges when uptake of energy into the organism with food exceeds use of energy. One has to remember that obesity is a serious disease which requires activities aimed at prevention and treatment of this “disease of the century” to be included into tactics of management of the patient. The reason of high mortality of obese people is not the disease itself but rather its complications and heavy associated diseases./p>
Cellulite -is such a change of fatty tissue where there is a disturbance of microcirculation of blood and lymph efflux with further development of fibrosis.
Local fat deposits are not directly related to general obesity. They are formed both in people with excessive weight and people with normal weight. Here, limited nutrition and physical exercise do not lead to reduction of them and a desirable correction. Liposuction is an effective way to quickly remove local fat deposits..
Both slim and chubby girls have practically the same number of fatty cells (adipocytes). However, the point is that cells differ in volume of contents of water and fat in them. Adipocytes do not divide and therefore if some of such cells are removed from certain place, their number will not restore. This is the essence and reason of sustainability of effect of liposuction. However, it is important to remember: you may gain excessive weight once again after removal of fat due to other zones unless you keep to the principle of proper nutrition and active lifestyle.
Types of liposuction and their advantages
Tumescent liposuction and its variations
This is the most safe, effective and common method. It is recognized as the best method of liposuction. It has the smallest number of complications compared to laser and ultrasonic liposuction. Klein solution is injected into fatty tissue before insertion of the cannula. It provides for anesthesia, narrowing of all blood vessels and ensuresalmost complete absence of hematomas. Modern technique of tumescent liposuction is of such a low traumatism that it makes possible for the clients to go to work on the next day. The effect is reinforced with every weak and reaches maximum in several months. It is done under local anesthesia.
Cannula connected to the aspirator is inserted into the fatty tissue.
Drawbacks. Vessels of blood circulation and lymphatic systems are damaged along with destruction and aspiration of fatty tissue. This is a reason of post-surgical hematomas and seromas.
Combined and thermal methods
Laser, ultrasonic liposuction is using the principle of destruction of fatty cells due to physical properties of the laser an ultrasound, along with mechanical damage of tissues.
Advantages: thermal impact both destroys fatty cells and coagulates all surrounding tissues including vessels while also causing light lifting of skin. Regretfully, the main advantage of heating up cells also becomes a big disadvantage manifested in formation of subcutaneous cicatrix (nicely named as “new collagen”) in large and small burns. This method is used for small volumes of liposuction. The effect is comparable to mesotherapy with sodium desoxycholate (Aqualyx drug).
Contraindications to liposuction
As any other surgical operation, liposuction has a number of contraindications including:
- diabetes mellitus
- disturbance of blood clotting function
- pregnancy and lactation
- heavy somatic diseases (diseases of internal organs)
- thrombophlebitis (varicose veins in the area of intended surgery)
- recent surgery sustained on the area planned for liposuction
- oncological diseases.
The period of restoration after liposuction is rather short and painless. Depending on the volume of fatty tissue removed and a method of liposuction, the patient in most cases may leave for home on the same day in case of feeling well and return to his/her habitual way of life.
It is recommended to wear special compressing garments and undergo a course of physiotherapy during the rehabilitation period. Going for sports is not prohibited in the period of restoration as it accelerates rehabilitation. However, it is better to withstand from visiting bath, sauna and solarium. An effect of liposuction is reinforced for 6 months depending on individual specificities of a patient and right post-operative care.
